Tephrocactus articulatus var. papyracanthus - Paper Spine Cactus

The Paper Spine Cactus consists of oval segments. These are by nature only loosely attached to each other and fall off the plant fairly easily. Once on soil, they can take root quickly and form a new plant. For this reason, these plants typically do not grow taller than 30 cm. With that this cactus is a perfect choice if you are looking for a special plant for a small space!

Plant Characteristics

The Paper Spine Cactus is native to western Argentina. There, it grows on the lower slopes of the Andes mountain range. it was first described in 1868 by Charles Lamarie. It also produces white to yellow flowers that make a nice contrast to the earth-tone colors of the plant.

Paper spine cactus is a very low maintenance plant. Like all cacti, this plant goes dormant during winter. So, you should not water it during this time and keep it in a bright, cool position. During the growing season, water it as soon as the soil is thoroughly dry. Also keep it in a very well-lit spot, such as a south-facing window or outside in warm temperatures.

Shipping

Your plant will be approximately 3 to 5 inches in height with well-developed roots. These starter plants have been growing in 4” containers, but will be shipped without them. The roots will be protected with some soil and sealed in a plastic bag. They are ready to plant up in arrival.
