Russian Sage Perovskia atriplicifolia Blue Spire

The Perovskia 'Blue Spire' (Russian Sage) plant is a hardy, upright multi-stemmed, sub-shrub or deciduous perennial that grows to 3 to 4 feet tall (to 5' if well irrigated) with stems that are thin, white and covered with finely-divided feathery olive-green leaves, which emit a pleasant aroma when touched.

The light fuzzy clusters of small lavender-blue flowers appear summer through early fall along the coast. Cut back to the lowest buds (nearly to the ground) in late fall as the plant tries to go dormant (leaves can linger here in our mild climate) or in early spring prior to new growth emerging.

Russian Sage is resistant to deer browsing and the flowers attract butterflies and honeybees and are nice in floral arrangements.

Growing Perovskia 'Blue Spire' Russian Sage

  • Plant Perovskia 'Blue Spire' Russian Sage in a location with full sun exposure, ensuring it receives at least 6 hours of sunlight daily for optimal growth and flowering.
  • Water the plant sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between watering sessions to prevent overwatering and root rot, as Russian Sage is drought-tolerant once established.
  • Use well-draining soil, such as sandy or loamy soil, to prevent waterlogging and promote healthy root development.
  • Perovskia 'Blue Spire' Russian Sage is hardy in USDA zones 5-9 and thrives in warm climates with well-drained soil.
  • Prune the plant in early spring to remove dead or damaged growth and encourage new growth, as well as to maintain its shape and promote vigorous flowering throughout the growing season.
