Asclepias curassavica 'Red Butterfly Milkweed'

The Red Butterfly Milkweed plant is a fabulous plant for attracting butterflies and hummingbirds; unusual and showy bicolored five-petaled flowers are bright gold with recurved scarlet-orange petals; adapts well to most soil types. Red Butterfly Milkweed features unusual scarlet flat-top recurved flowers with gold eyes at the ends of the stems from mid summer to late fall. The flowers are excellent for cutting.

This plant is an herbaceous annual with an upright spreading habit of growth. Its medium texture blends into the garden, but can always be balanced by a couple of finer or coarser plants for an effective composition. This is a relatively low maintenance plant, and is best cleaned up in early spring before it resumes active growth for the season. It is a good choice for attracting butterflies and hummingbirds to your yard.

Growing Red Butterfly Milkweed

  • Plant in a location with full sun exposure, ensuring it receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and flowering.
  • Provide well-draining soil, such as sandy or loamy soil, to prevent waterlogging and promote healthy root development.
  • Water regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during the growing season and establishment period.
  • Prune the plant lightly to remove spent blooms and promote continuous flowering, as well as to maintain its shape and encourage bushier growth.
  • Hardy in USDA zones 3-9, Red Butterfly Milkweed attracts pollinators like butterflies and bees and is suitable for perennial gardens and butterfly gardens.
