Rosmarinus officinalis Huntington Carpet Prostrate Rosemary

There are now many exciting cultivars of the Mediterranean rosemary to be found in nurseries and garden centers. Prostrate Rosemaryhas been in the trade for many decades and has proven to be tough and reliable under many landscape conditions.

This cultivar is a low growing evergreen shrub with a dense foliage habit; it can mound to 24 in. tall and spread 5-6 ft. wide. Its foliage is comprised of narrow needle-like leaves that are deep green above and whitish below.

Plant Characteristics

Attractive small pale blue flowers occur in late winter and intermittently throughout the year. Foliage is valued as a food seasoning and contains oils that are used in perfumes, lotions and soaps; flowers attract birds and bees.

Prostrate rosemary is well suited for ground cover plantings on slopes and banks of all sizes, as well as in containers, drought tolerant gardens and along garden borders.

Growing Huntington Carpet-Prostrate Rosemary

  • Plant in a location with full sun exposure, ensuring it receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and blooming.
  • Provide well-draining soil, such as sandy or loamy soil, to prevent waterlogging and root rot, promoting healthy root development.
  • Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between watering sessions, as it is drought-tolerant once established and prefers dry conditions.
  • Prune the plant regularly to maintain its low, spreading form, remove dead or damaged branches, and encourage bushier growth.
  • Hardy in USDA zones 8-10, it thrives in warm climates and is well-suited for use as ground cover, in rock gardens, or cascading over walls.
