Our Lord’s Candle Yucca
Our Lord’s Candle Yucca
Our Lord’s Candle Yucca whipplei
Our Lords candle is one of the most distinctive signature plants among California's native flora. Both its vegetative growth habit and flowering character have made it an icon of dry landscape settings. It is easy to grow in cultivation with good drainage and little summer water. It provides striking accent value in native gardens and in combination with rocks; flowering can occur after 5-6 years of growth. Careful placement is important to reduce the hazard posed by its sharply pointed leaves. A 1-3' evergreen stemless shrub. It has cream colored flowers in an 8' spike. The leaves are spine-tipped. It likes full sun, no water after established. It tolerates serpentine soil. A good barrier plant.
Growing Our Lord’s Candle Yucca
- Plant Our Lord's Candle Yucca (Yucca whipplei) in a location with full sun exposure to ensure optimal growth and flowering.
- Provide well-draining soil, such as sandy or rocky soil, to prevent water-logging and root rot.
- Water sparingly once established, as Yucca whipplei is drought-tolerant and prefers dry conditions.
- Prune away dead or damaged leaves as needed to maintain a tidy appearance.
- Our Lord's Candle Yucca is native to the southwestern United States and is hardy in USDA zones 7-10, making it an excellent choice for xeriscapes, desert gardens, or as a dramatic focal point in the landscape.
