Our Lord’s Candle Yucca whipplei Plant

Our Lords candle is one of the most distinctive signature plants among California's native flora. Both its vegetative growth habit and flowering character have made it an icon of dry landscape settings. It is easy to grow in cultivation with good drainage and little summer water.

It provides striking accent value in native gardens and in combination with rocks; flowering can occur after 5-6 years of growth. Careful placement is important to reduce the hazard posed by its sharply pointed leaves. A 1-3' evergreen stemless shrub. It has cream colored flowers in an 8' spike. The leaves are spine-tipped. It likes full sun, no water after established. It tolerates serpentine soil. A good barrier plant.

Our Lord’s Candle Yucca was also an important fiber plant. The Diegueno and Cahuilla used the fibers for sandals while the Chumash and the Gabrielino used it for fishing line. Whole or split yucca leaves were also utilized for rough tying of bundles of firewood, house frames, and for basketry.

To retrieve and prepare the fibers, the leaves were immersed in water until the epidermal sheath and the connecting round tissue rotted away. The leaves may also have been pounded with a wooden mallet to facilitate the process. The fibers are then buried in mud to whiten them, washed and combed.

Your plant will be shipped with the roots wrapped in damp paper towels and with plastic and ready to plant upon arrival. The plant will be between 3” to 4” in height.
