New Vintage Red Yarrow
New Vintage Red Yarrow Achillea m. Balvinred
A New Vintage Red Yarrow plant is bred to be short and compact with stems that won’t fall over under the weight of its flowers. Features lacey silver-green foliage and blooms late spring through summer with flat umbels of tiny, pink/ light red flowers. Makes a great front of the bed plant in cottage gardens and perennial beds. The naming of this selection is a bit misleading as the flower color is much more in the pink ranges rather than red. Like most Achillea used in the S. California region, material will ‘winterize’ but typically not go fully dormant.
Growing New Vintage Red Yarrow
- Plant New Vintage Red Yarrow (Achillea millefolium 'New Vintage Red') in a location with full sun exposure, ensuring it receives at least 6 hours of sunlight daily for optimal growth and flowering.
- Provide well-draining soil, such as sandy or loamy soil, to prevent waterlogging and root rot, promoting healthy root development.
- Water regularly during the plant's establishment period, then adjust to a moderate watering schedule, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
- Deadhead spent blooms regularly to promote continuous flowering throughout the growing season and maintain a tidy appearance.
- New Vintage Red Yarrow is hardy in USDA zones 4-9 and attracts pollinators like butterflies and bees to the garden. It is drought-tolerant once established and can tolerate poor soil conditions.
