Dasylirion longissimum, also known as Mexican Grass Tree or Sotol, is a striking and resilient plant native to Mexico. Here's some information on its characteristics:

  • Habitat: Dasylirion longissimum is typically found in arid regions, including desert scrublands and rocky slopes. It's well adapted to thrive in dry and sunny conditions.

  • Growth Rate: This plant is known for its relatively slow growth rate. It's not the quickest to mature, but the wait is often worth it due to its unique appearance.

  • Mature Size: The mature size of Dasylirion longissimum can vary, but it generally reaches a height of 6 to 10 feet, with a spread of 3 to 6 feet. The rosette of narrow, arching leaves contributes to its distinctive look.

  • Landscape Application: This plant is commonly used in xeriscape gardens and desert landscaping. Its architectural form and long, slender leaves make it a focal point in gardens with a Southwestern, Mediterranean, Contemporary or arid theme. It works well in both residential and commercial landscapes planted in the ground or planted in decorative pots in suitable environments.

  • Cold Hardiness: Dasylirion longissimum is known for its cold hardiness. It can tolerate temperatures down to around 15 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

When cultivating Dasylirion longissimum, it's essential to provide well-draining soil and to avoid overwatering, as it is adapted to arid conditions.  All of our plants are shipped bare root.  Five gallon plants average 18"x18", Fifteen gallon plants average 24"x24"         and 24" box sized plants average 36"x36".
