Hot Lips Sage Salvia microphylla 'Hot Lips'

A unique and striking North American native with unusual two-toned flowers backed by very fine green foliage. The blooms appear continuously through the hottest of summers until the first frost in fall. An ideal compact, colorful, and carefree choice for sunny, low-water gardens. Withstands mild drought once established. An herbaceous perennial.

Irresistible hummingbird nectar flower that belongs in wildlife gardens. Exceptional in xeriscapes with dryland species from around the world. Perfectly matched with southwestern native sages. Add to beds and borders. Lends a decidedly cottage garden look.

Growing Hot Lips Sage

  • Thrives in well-draining soil, preferring sandy or loamy soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0.
  • Water regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during hot weather.
  • Prefers full sun, needing at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and flowering.
  • Tolerates high temperatures well but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged heatwaves.
  • Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new growth, removing any dead or leggy growth.
  • Best suited for USDA Hardiness Zones 7 to 10.
