Hinkelhatz Pepper Seeds
Hinkelhatz Pepper Seeds
Hinkelhatz Peppers are an American heirloom that has been grown by Mennonite settlers since the 1880s. These small fruits may look harmless, but they pack a surprising amount of heat that adds a little kick to any sort of food dish.
The phrase “hinkelhatz” is Pennsylvania Dutch that translates to “chicken heart,” which is used to describe this pepper’s conical shape and size. These plants grow around 2 ft. tall and produce high yields of these small pods, which ripen from a dark green to a glossy red. Hinkelhatz pepper plants also work as great ornamental plants to spruce up your garden!
Originally, the Mennonites used Hinkelhatz peppers exclusively for pickling and for making a pepper vinegar out of it due to its surprising heat. However, growers have learned to use these peppers for a variety of culinary uses such as roasting, cooking, drying, and for making sauce. The heat is comparable to that of a Cayenne pepper and the flavors have been described to be very fruity and juicy with every bite you take.
