Giant Chain Fern
Giant Chain Fern
Giant Chain Fern - Woodwardia fimbriata
Woodwardia Chain Fern is a species of fern known by the common name giant chain fern. It is native to the forests of the west coast of North America, and is the largest fern in North America. It has very long fronds, each reaching up to 8 feet in length. Its sori are short but broad and are arranged in neat lines, the characteristic that gives the chain ferns their name.
The chain shape is visible on both surface and underside of each leaflet. It can be either evergreen or summer deciduous depending on its growing conditions. It is a large, evergreen perennial with thick, rugged fronds. Hardy in zones 4-10, it is easy to grow and requires very little maintenance; perfect for beginner gardeners.
Growing Giant Chain Fern
- Plant Giant Chain Fern in a location with partial to full shade, where it can thrive in moist, well-draining soil.
- Water the fern regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, mimicking its natural habitat near streams or in damp woodlands.
- Use organic mulch, such as leaf litter or compost, to help retain soil moisture and provide nutrients as it decomposes.
- Giant Chain Fern is hardy in USDA zones 7-10 and can tolerate cool temperatures but may need protection from frost in colder climates.
- Prune away any dead or damaged fronds in late winter or early spring to promote new growth and maintain an attractive appearance.
