Spoon Yucca
Dasylirion wheeleri 'Spoon Yucca'
The Dasylirion wheeleri Spoon Yucca plant is an evergreen perennial plant, known for its unique leaf shape and beautiful yellow blooms. The one-gallon size plant is a slow-growing, drought-tolerant species that is easy to care for. Its foliage makes an excellent addition to any garden or landscape, providing an exotic and modern look to any space.
Plant Characteristics
This type of yucca is a long-lived plant with long, gray strap-shaped serrated leaves on a stout short trunk that can rise 4 to 6 feet and the spread can be about the same. The 3 foot long narrow leaves are blue-gray color with sharp serrated margins and a spoon shaped base that gives the plant one of its common name. These leaf bases remain on the trunk giving it a rough appearance.
Flowering occurs only every few years with tiny pale brownish greenish male or female flowers on stout spikes 10 to 15 feet tall from the center of the leaf rosette in early summer.
After flowering the rosette branches at the base of the inflorescence to replace the flowering rosette and enabling the stem to continue to grow on. Though flowering is not a regular occurrence the flowers are interesting and attract bees, butterflies and other insects to the garden.
Growing Spoon Yucca
- Plant Spoon Yucca in a location with full sun exposure, ensuring it receives at least 6 hours of sunlight daily for optimal growth.
- Water the plant sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between watering sessions to prevent overwatering and root rot, as it is drought-tolerant once established.
- Use well-draining soil, such as sandy or rocky soil, to prevent waterlogging and promote healthy root development.
- Spoon Yucca is hardy in USDA zones 7-11 and can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, making it suitable for various climates.
- Prune the plant occasionally to remove dead or damaged foliage and maintain its attractive, spoon-shaped leaves.
