Citronella Mosquito Geranium
Citronella Mosquito Geranium Pelargonium citrosum
Citronella plant (Pelargonium citrosum 'van Leenii') is a popular scented geranium with large, wrinkled, lacy green leaves that complement its pink petals. A member of the geranium family, the plant grows easily in pots and the ground—with a bushy spread of 2 feet tall and wide. With its introduction to the market in the 1990s, the plant was heavily marketed as a plant to repel mosquitoes. The lemony fragrance emitted from its leaves is similar to citronella. While still a lovely addition to the garden, the mosquito repellant claims have proven untrue.
Growing Citronella Mosquito Geranium
- Plant in a location with full sun to partial shade, ensuring it receives at least 6 hours of sunlight daily for optimal growth and strong fragrance.
- Provide well-draining soil, such as a standard potting mix with added perlite or sand, to prevent waterlogging and root rot.
- Water the plant regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during the growing season.
- Prune the plant regularly to maintain its shape, remove spent blooms, and encourage bushier growth, promoting continuous blooming throughout the growing season.
- Citronella Mosquito Geranium is hardy in USDA zones 9-11 and can be grown as an annual in cooler climates. It can also be grown in containers and brought indoors during colder months.
