Eschscholzia californica 'California Poppy'

The California Poppy plant is native to grassy and open areas in the western United States. It can grow 5-60 centimeters tall, with alternately branching waxy pale blue-green foliage. The leaves are divided into round, lobed segments.Β The flowers are solitary on long stems, silky-textured, with four petals, each petal broad; their color ranges from yellow to orange, and flowering is from February to September.

The petals close at night or in cold, windy weather and open again the following morning, although they may remain closed in cloudy weather. The fruit is a slender capsule 3-9 centimeters long, which splits in two to release the numerous small black or dark brown seeds. It is perennial in mild parts of its native range, and annual in harsher colder and hotter climates. Leaves and roots are rumored to have a sedative effect.

Growing California Poppy

  • Plant California Poppies in a location with full sun exposure, as they thrive in bright sunlight.
  • Ensure well-draining soil, such as sandy or loamy soil, to prevent waterlogging, as California Poppies are susceptible to root rot in waterlogged conditions.
  • Water sparingly, as they are drought-tolerant plants, and avoid overwatering, especially during the summer months.
  • California Poppies are annuals in most climates, but they readily self-seed, so they often reappear in the same location each year.
  • Deadhead spent blooms regularly to promote continuous flowering and prevent self-seeding if desired.
