Australian Tree Fern
Australian Tree Fern
Australian Tree Fern Alsophila australis
Australian tree ferns are beautiful, finely cut, broad, bright green fronds that are spread out from atop a slender trunk, creating a lush and exotic accent with a palm tree-like affect. The fastest growing of the tree ferns and a stunning specimen for adding a tropical element to large containers on patios or indoors, or in temperate landscapes. A frost-tender evergreen. Australian tree ferns are excellent for shaded nooks and under the canopies of larger shade trees. They add a decidedly lush exotic character to any space, be it under eaves or in atriums. Give them plenty of room overhead and combine with large-leafed foliage plants and very fiery colored exotic flowers.
Growing Australian Tree Fern
- Plant in a location with partial to full shade, as it prefers indirect sunlight and can tolerate low light conditions.
- Provide well-draining, rich, and slightly acidic soil with plenty of organic matter to promote healthy growth and prevent water-logging.
- Water regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, as Australian Tree Fern thrives in humid environments and requires ample moisture.
- Prune dead or damaged fronds to maintain the plant's appearance and health, and to encourage new growth.
- Australian Tree Fern is hardy in USDA zones 9-11 and benefits from protection from strong winds and cold temperatures. Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and provide additional protection in cooler climates.
