White Sage Salvia apiana

White Sage is native to the low to medium elevations of the coastal sage scrub and chaparral of southern California and adjacent Baja California. The plant is a medium sized shrub that is three to five feet tall and just as wide. The woolly foliage is fragrant and silver gray. The stems carry small whorls of white flowers in late spring and early summer. Flower spikes can be to seven or eight feet high.

Unique Qualities

White sage Salvia apiana is drought deciduous. That means that it will lose some leaves in response to drought. This is a characteristic of plants from the coastal sage scrub community. To keep the plants from losing many leaves in the summer, they can be watered sparingly, but this also tends to shorten their life.

This White Sage Salvia apiana plant is perfect for adding a touch of natural beauty to any space. With its distinct white color, this plant is not only visually appealing but also offers many potentialĀ medicinalĀ & emotional benefits,Ā it can be used as an insect repellant, as well as be made into incense for air purification and relaxation. A must-have for any plant lover or wellness enthusiast.

Growing White Sage

  • Well-draining sandy or loamy soil with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5 is preferred.
  • Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry out completely between waterings, with every 2-3 weeks in the growing season and minimal to no watering in winter.
  • At least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily, but can tolerate partial shade with less vigorous growth.
  • It prefers warm to hot temperatures, ideally between 70-90Ā°F (21-32Ā°C), and can tolerate as low as 20Ā°F (-6Ā°C).
  • Light pruning in early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and pinching back new growth encourages bushiness, avoiding heavy pruning in late summer and fall.
  • Best suited for USDA Hardiness Zones 7 to 9.
