Lemon-Scented Tea Tree Leptospermum petersonii

The Lemon-Scented Tea Tree Leptospermum petersonii plant is a small tree 10-20' with fine, lime green scented foliage and white flowers in early summer. Hardy to most soils and situations. It is tolerant of light frosts, extended dry periods and pruning. Great small tree for small gardens. Excellent screen, windbreak and hedge. Leaves and stems contain essential oils used in candle and soap making. Leaves can be used as a tea substitute.

Unique Qualities

The leaves are used to brew a strongly aromatic tea, or they can be added as a flavoring to China tea. They are strongly lemon-scented. The leaves, and especially the essential oil obtained from them, is antibacterial, antiseptic and mildly sedative. The essential oil is used in aromatherapy.

Growing Lemon-Scented Tea Trees

  • Plant in well-draining soil and provide full sun to partial shade.
  • Water regularly, especially during the first growing season, but allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
  • Prune lightly to maintain shape and remove any dead or diseased growth.
  • Fertilize sparingly with a balanced fertilizer in spring to support healthy growth and fragrance production.
  • Protect from frost and extreme temperatures, particularly during the winter months.
