Artichoke Agave 'Parry's Agave' Agave Parryi

The artichoke agave, Agave Parryi is a herbaceous evergreen perennial succulent and a member of the family Asparagaceae along with many other agave varieties. It hails from Northern Mexico, Arizona, and New Mexico. Individual rosettes flower only one time, usually around the age of 10 or 15 years. Some specimens, delay flowering until reaching 20 to 30 years of age. Mass plantings of Parry’s agave are extremely impressive. Every flowering Artichoke agave plant will display a giant flower stalk reaching as 20′ feet tall. Each flower spike has multiple side branches (up to 30), and every branch is graced with hundreds of fragrant, bright yellow flowers.

Growing Parry's Agave

  • Plant Parry's Agave in a location with full sun exposure, ensuring it receives at least 6 hours of sunlight daily for optimal growth and development.
  • Water the plant sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between watering sessions to prevent overwatering and root rot, as it is drought-tolerant once established.
  • Use well-draining soil, such as sandy or rocky soil, to prevent water-logging and promote healthy root growth.
  • Parry's Agave is hardy in USDA zones 9-11 and thrives in warm, arid climates, making it suitable for desert landscaping.
  • Prune the plant occasionally to remove dead or damaged leaves and maintain its attractive rosette shape.
