Hillside Gooseberry Ribes californicum Plant One Gallon Size
Hillside Gooseberry is a native currant with a widespread distribution, growing all along the California coast from Mendocino to Orange County. Grows as an upright shrub with a slightly rambling habit that reaches 3 to 5 feet tall and wide. Features small, dark green, lobed foliage. In late winter and early spring, it’s covered in tiny, white, bell-shaped flowers enclosed in garnet red calyces.
Flowers attract hummingbirds, and berries are a source of food for birds. It’s also a host to many butterfly and moth species. Perfect for wildlife gardens, woodland gardens, or planted under oaks. Prefers part to full shade inland. Plant in well-drained soil and water regularly to occasionally. Branches and berries are covered in sharp spines, so it should be planted where it will be out of reach of people and pets. Summer and winter deciduous.
