Duke Blueberry
Duke is a Northern highbush blueberry cultivar which is well known for good cold hardiness, vigor, and large numbers of 1/4" - 1/2" light blue colored fruit with good sweetness. Mature Duke specimens will mature at a slightly larger / taller size than many other highbush varieties if left to grow naturally, and untrimmed. To obtain maximum fruit yield, a second variety of Blueberry is recommended to be planted within close proximity - doing so will usually increase both fruit set, as well as fruit size. Be sure to try and select another variety that tends to bloom at around the same time, which will maximize pollination, and berry set. Foliage of Duke is rather large leaved ( up to 3" - 3 1/2" long ), oval shaped, and very nice deep green in color. Fall coloration consists of very attractive shades of yellow & orange.
Growing Conditions for Duke Blueberry
White bell shaped blooms begin in May, with fruit set beginning shortly after - beginning to ripen in mid season ( mid to late June in East TN ). Most all blueberry cultivars tend to have rather shallow root systems, which will require adequate amounts of water, especially during fruiting. Duke is known to be one of the easiest Blueberry varieties to grow, and is a great choice for beginners who wish to produce berries of their own. Recommended Hardiness zones 5-8.
